Tin mining on Dartmoor: a tour of mine remains in Challacombe valley

Explore mining remains dating from medieval times to the 20th century in the company of Challacombe farmer Mark as well as Geri.

Learn about techniques used through the ages to mine and process tin on Dartmoor. We will come across wheel pits, mould stones, buddles and more. What is a buddle, you ask? You will find out! Learn too about what life was like for miners in times past and the horrible punishments meted out to those who transgressed mining law.

We finish back at the farm with tea and biscuits.

This event is also available with the option of a pasty or cream tea – or both!

A photo of an ancient mould stone from the 13th century. The stone has patches of moss and contains a small pool of water. It is photographed on a grassy patch of ground.

“It was lovely to really explore the moor and with your guide’s knowledge and skill at tracking down what sometimes appear to be needles in haystacks, become a part of it by being able to escape from the beaten track and discover artefacts from civilisations long since departed, and giving a sense of a once much more inhabited landscape.”
