Navigation for beginners
This is a practical course introducing you to use of map and compass. It is suitable for complete beginners and those with some experience wishing to revise the basics. You will build your skills progressively during the day, walking and practising each technique repeatedly as we go.
What you’ll learn
• Map scales, symbols and features
• Grid references
• Matching what is around you to what is on the map, and vice versa
• Contours
• Judging and calculating distances and walking speeds
• Planning a sensible route from A to B
• Features to look out for so you know if you are on track
• Working out where you are when you think you’re lost
• Plus anything that comes up during the day, including your questions
